The main difference to me (following Hull's concepts for Laphriinae) is the lack of the 'Laphria' proboscis -- the long, greatly flattened, parallel-sided 'butter knife' mouthparts of the Laphriini s. str. (characteristic of genera like
Laphria,
Choerades,
Lampria,
Maira, etc.).
Orthogonis has a more cylindrical (in cross section), triangular - tapered proboscis. The males of
O. scapularis have a bright - golden face and mystax
