Any suggestions of the identity of this fly with a distinctive "snout" would be appreciated.

It is a Syrphid, a
Rhingia
, and probably
R. rostrata
. Try the key

Thanks again for the ID Sundew and the link to the key. I've taken a look at these and at the Stubbs and Falk Hoverfly book and agree with R rostrata based on the lack of any sign of a black margin to the tergites.
