Can you tell the host plant? I am no coleopterology expert, but that animal looks exactly like a larva of the weevil
Stereonychus fraxini (Curculionidae, as Paul already wrote) which is very abundant here in Germany on ash (
Fraxinus excelsior). That does not exclude similar looking larvae of other Curculionidae, anyway...

Unfortunately I can not. Remeber this image is from Japan and I do not know the local flora, which is vastly more diverse that the one in Central Europe. The only thing I remember is that it was not a tree, it was a much smaller plant.
