31 July 2007, New Brunswick, Canada.
Based on lokks and size, length 16mm, this is probably
Archytas aterrimus. This is a bulky fly that reaches a length of 17mm; anything bigger in Europe?

If I had seen that in Europe I'd have identified it as
Tachina grossa, a very large species that often reaches 20mm

Thanks Chris. Did some checking and see that we have both genera in NA. The key character, for here, to separate these 2 genera is the shape of the 1st flagellomere; that makes this specimen a
very small Tachina.
Keeping a lookout for that 30mm tachinid
