I have a crane fly larva growing in a sample of lake shore mud. The siphon end has two dark spots surrounded by brown rings. Time lapse movie linked above speeds up the action 90 X. The siphon end is about 1.5mm wide. This is the tip of the iceberg as the larva is about 15mm long.
