Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Neomochtherus firmus?
#1
Hello, according to you, it might be a Neomochtherus firmus, thanks for any answers.
#3
The photos were taken in Campania, southern Italy

#4
I don't think this is a Neomochtherus species but rather a Tolmerus or Machimus species.....a picture of a male would be welcome.....
#5
Many thanks !!

#6
Go look for a male :-) it might be M. minusculus....
#7
Ok I will try, but it will not be very easy.

#11
Wow, you found the male....:-) But now i know it is not M. minusculus...:-(..... still have too look further.....
#12
Hi, I think yours and
mine one could be the same species
#13
Armen, I am sure they are not the same species. Their general appearance is very different. And more importantly, genitalia are different as are the thoracic bristles...
#14
Ok friends, can anybody make a hypothesis of ID, at least the genre?

#15
Reinoud already told you

:
Tolmerus or
Machimus. It is one of those for sure. But the chaotic taxonomic situation of this group of genera makes the ID from pictures, even just to genus level, almost impossible. Sometimes it is very tricky even with the specimen in hand.
I applaud Reinoud as he usually ID from pictures specimens of these very tricky Asilinae with a 'cf.' Very prudent and very wise
#16
Ok Piluca, I believe you are right. Wish anyone could ID my flies

#17
Thank you Piluca! :-) @ Armen, your species belongs indeed to the same group and M. rusticus could well be right. If your picture were taken in NW Europe i would have been sure...
