Hello!
In addition to some of the bigger
Cheilosia canicularis there also were these ones of about half the size visting flowers yesterday here in Ostwestfalen/Germany. Is it possible to tell what it is from the not so good photo? Thanks in advance!

Judging by the compact build body, I would say a female Cheilosia vernalis.
Thanks, John! But doesn't the name
vernalis indicate that that should be a spring species?

Dear Juergen,
There's a lot more to the taxonomy of this one (or perhaps many) species than just the significance of the verb 'vernalis'.
The species we call
C. vernalis has at least two generations per year and can be found as late as October.
best wishes,
John
