Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Gadfly Tabanus
#1
Hello,
France, Sondersdorf, F68480, 468m, 11.07.2010
Using the key Baldacchino (d’après Chvála et al. 1972) I found out Tabanus. After, unfortunately I’m blocked on point 20 where the white parts on abdomena points to 21
21 could match for T. rectus or T. autumnalis but it seems that they have black antennas.
Any idea?

So, you went wrong. It is not a “large” species.
What about eye band ?
Are there longer white hairs present behind the eyes ?
What about habitat ?

No eye band
Behind the eyes only short white-yellowish hairs
Near a small lake.

Please, have a very close look for the eye band. The specimen is daed for > 1/2 year, so it is difficult to see.
I can see the hairs on occiput, I am pretty sure.
If there is really no eye band, it is T. miki.

Unfoortunately I had an accident with the specimen wich lost his antennas! But I can use the pictures taken before.

Difficult to be sure, but certainly looks like miki.

Thanks a lot.
I checked with the key an effectively T. miki it seems to match.
