Could this be the unattractively named Calliphora vomitaria?
Thanks, Sarah

Or Calliphora Vicina?, I see a sharp kink in the M-vein, Calliphora Vicina got also this kink in the M-vein(I am not sure). And I read that thorax and body of the Vicina must be hairy!?
Perhabs a specialist can tell you more...

For a
Calliphora I would expect it to be more blueish, but, hey, what do I know about Calliphoridae?

Thanks Robert and Paul. The lack of blue sheen could be due to the light in the undergrowth which tends to accentuate reflectance to the detriment of good colour rendition. I in fact remember it as rather bluer than it appears in the photo, Sarah

I think this is really
Calliphora, but is it hard to tell if it is
vomitoria or
vicina or some other species. In the keys I used one of the feature was the color and amount of different hairs on the head, but the head is hardly visible in your picture...

That's very useful feedback Andrius. The next time I'll know the importance of also including a photo of the face. For all that they're common, they're actually very difficult to photograph calmly as they are nearly always restless and have little patience with photographers
