Yes, I've read a lot in the forum and a lot more in several keys and still I try to learn more of these interesting flies!
What do you think of Haarto's descriptions in his key female:
- Wing membrane grey, nearly hyaline: johannis
if brownish ->
- Dorsal and ventral side of abdomen dark: lanigerus
- Ventral side abdomen distinctly paler than dorsal side: varipes

As said ... good luck !
I am vey suspicious of so many female varipes, and so few males.
That said, it is a statistical argument not apllicable to individual cases. I stick to males and pinned females.
