Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Psychodidae: Clogmia or Lepiseodina latipennis
#1
Based on the discussion here, the content of the flag on iNaturalist and subsequent own literature research, I commited taxon swaps for the three species.
L. superba and
conspicua were already in that genus.
In
Clogmia, besides the common species the remaining ones are
C. coronata, caboverdeana and
poncianicula (there are probably species missing which are not yet in the iNat-database). Flags could be created to have them added as well

South-American and Asian species maybe. Let's wait for the revision of Clogmia!
Thanks for the swap!

Apparently, the taxonomic reference in France (TAXREF) has not yet validated the change of genus and the identification Clogmia latipennis is only valid.
Is INPN responsible for the French list?
Edit: I've mailed them already

iNaturalist uses specific sources as the source of truth. Which one depends on the taxon. I don't recall what it is for Diptera. If whatever database they use uses Clogmia, the taxon swap won't happen if the proper procedure is followed. I think sometimes new papers can override that, though, like, for example, recently published DNA studies. But those should eventually filter down to the other databases anyway.

There is no authority as a source for Diptera taxonomy.
As a rough orientation, Systema Dipterorum has been suggested to use, but of course with a lot of care.
I checked the database, and was surprised to find
Lepiseodina listed as a junior synonym for
Clogmia. A source was also given:
Kvifte 2018 - in that paper, however,
Lepiseodina and
Clogmia are both listed as valid genera...
Searching for 'latipennis' within Psychodidae returns only
Psychoda latipennis Tonnoir, 1939
Telmatoscopus latipennis SarĂ , 1953
The latter one is the accepted taxon in GBIF and =
Lepiseodina latipennis

Taxonomy is a joy forever. Or a never ending work. This particular species is described as Telmatoscopus latipennis, part of Telmatoscopus is moved to Clogmia and part of Clogmia to Lepiseodina.
Psychodidae taxonomy isn't stable at the moment unfortunately.

Yes, it's the INPN

Liliane, can you include your observation in iNaturalist? That will generate a correct map.

A redescription of the species is in the making, I heard.

I tried to register on iNaturalist but it is too complicated for me and I gave up.
If you want, you can report this post on iNaturalist so that the observation is listed there.
I have given information about the location of the observation in our discussion. If there is any other information that is important, please feel free to ask me.
Thank you all for the discussion.
