Are they Dolichopodidae?
Dima DD
Hello to all,
I'm new on this forum! Smile I'm a geologist, but very interested in entomology and macro-photography, too. I decided to ask Diptera specialists about the flies which I cannot identify by my own. Almost all my photos are from Toksovo (a village approx. 20 km to the N from St.Petersburg, Russia). I shot these two flies at June 26, 2005; they are about 4-5 mm in length. I suggested they belong to the same specie, possibly Dolichopodidae: 1st - male (picture is rotated CCW 90?), 2nd - female, but I'm not sure (strange color and stripes on the abdomen?). Am I wrong? Is it possible to recognize genus on these photos?
Thanks, Dima Smile

Yes, they are male (top) and female (bottom) of Neurigona quadrifasciata. They are always very high on the legs, males have big genitalia. The male of this species has those modified for legs (last tarsal segments). You find them nearly always on tree trunks but it looks as if you did not. Smile
