Id bred from Larva
Dave M
Hi,
My 1st post here, so hope this is OK.
I have reared 2 larva that have turned into flies.
The first I think is what it is supposed to be.
The second is a parasite from Lepidoptera.
I would like to find out more about them both, if at-all possible.
The larva were both collected in east Sussex.

The first possibly Tenthredinidae Sawfly
Date Found Oct 4 2007
Found at Coneyburrow Wood TQ808201
Found on sedge.
Oct 12 made a pupa
march 30 hatched out.

The second possibly Ichneumonidae subfamily Campopleginae
Date Found 11 October 2007
Location found at Coneyburrow Wood TQ805204
Plant found on bramble
Oct 12
Looks as if it is turning a darker colour.
Have not notice any sign of it feeding.
Oct 13
It has created a small cocoon on the surface of a bramble leaf.
Mar 30
There is a fly in the container. This must be a parasite.

OK looks like I can only post 1 image. I will try and add second image in a reply.
I have more pic's of both if it helps. Also pics of larva and pupa's
Regards Dave

And the second one.

Hi Dave

Welcome to the forum Smile

First is certainly a sawfly but not sure which it might be - Andy Halstead at RHS Wisley is your man if you can't get a name here.

Second doesn't look like a campoplegine to me but I am not a real expert - best wait for Camille Smile

BTW, it's best to post one species per thread - less confusing when the replies come it and sticks to the forum rules better Wink

Cheers
Chris R.

OK, THANKS
Point taken about it being less confusing.
What forum rules have I broken. I just read all the text, and thought I had done.

Hi Dave - not sure if it is in the official rules or not (Paul will know as he makes them! Wink) but it's certainly good ettiquette to post 1 species per thread unless the subsequent photos pertain to the first or are contributing to an ongoing discussion in that thread Smile

The reason (I think) is that Paul has instigated a system where posters to the 'other insects' forum are limited to a certain number of posts per day - this is because it was getting too busy and Paul wanted to keep this site primarily Diptera-based and keep other orders in the minority Smile So, posts to 'other insects' are welcome but just in moderation Wink

Just another point but it's also good ettiquette to keep photos to a maximum of 640 pixels in either dimension - just to make the pages easier to view on smaller screens. Smile

The forums are very friendly and don't actually have many 'rules' as such, so you aren't in any trouble. It's just a matter of ettiquette more than anything.
