These hydra-like things are made of sand and have a larva in the stem. From looking in picture books, I think they are the chironomid Rheotanytarsus sp. Can anyone say for sure, please? They are from the edge of the River Ogwen, near Bangor, North Wales, 24 May 2008. John Bratton |
