Interesting beetle (larva?)

Saw this strange beetle burrowing into chalky soil in southern England today - size just over 1cm. Can anyone tell me what it might be?

Might be a Silpha larva (carrion beetle), compare to thread http://www.dipter...ad_id=8551!

That looks very similar - thanks Smile We do have Silpha sp. on the ame site so that is very likely and your photos look a very close match Grin

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
