Looking through lots of images, Lauxaniidae looks like the best match to me. I particularly found some photos of genus Minettia that looked similar. These flies seemed to be everywhere here earlier this Spring. This photo was taken in late May. Location: West Virginia, USA, woodlands. --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |

It is indeed [Minettia. It very much resembles M. lupulina and [/i]M. desmometopa[/i] of the Palaearctic (the black posterior margin of the scutellum and a dark silver grey thorax).
