Wasp from June > Ancistrocerus cf trifasciatus [Libor]
Stephen R
These were flying in Yorkshire for a week or two around June 20. I haven't checked the size, but I guess about 7-8mm [EDIT: this is correct]. Any help appreciated!

Hymnenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae: Ancistrocerus sp., male. This genus is very difficult to ID under microscope, almost impossible from a single picture. But in this animal i would say A. trifasciatus, 90% :-). Libor

Many thanks Libor, I wasn't expecting such a complete answer!

I found another view which adds a little more detail.

hmm, much better, but not the best view. In these wasps, the shape of 2nd sternum solves almost everything. But in general, this view supports my first ID. Libor

Next time I'll shoot it as it flies over my head! Thanks again Libor Smile
