 Dolichopodidae?

Everytime I looked at flies like this I thought Scathophagidae, don't ask me why. I only have a key to european families and I find it very hard to follow as it uses details that cannot easily be seen in a photo. But then I started to use the key backwords, it generally has a single end for each family, and I was able to rule out a lot of "my mind only scathophagids" because they miss this or that characteristic. Just blah blah ... jorgemotalmeida told me this one was Dolichopodidae. About 6-7mm long, shot in 2003/05/01, center of Portugal in a pathway amongst crop fields. If not a Dolichopodidae, this one is very similar to that.

yes it is Dolichopodidae - unmistakeable shiny green flies.

I forgot to ask! Is there any special characteristic in the photo that shows imediatly that it belongs do this family? Being little and shiny green is enough? Thank you

Thank you I will try to answer your question, but I?m not expertise on these theme.  These flies are very small, in general. They have bright metallic colors, mostly green or bronze. Their legs are long so they also have other common name Long-legged Flies. But not all dolichopodidae flies has long legs... (for puzzling more to us! I saw dolichopodidae with a peculiar position in relation to a surface. These flies, at least what I already saw -- have a vertical position of their body in relation to a surface... but I don?t know if all dolichopodidae flies shares this behaviour. The eyes of these flies are metallic too, in general, I think. If I'm getting this wrong, please fix it! Vou tentar responder ? tua quest?o, mas n?o sou um especialista nestas coisas. De uma forma geral estas moscas s?o muito pequenas. Possuem cores met?licas brilhantes, na sua maioria esverdeadas ou bronzeadas. As suas patas s?o t?o compridas que elas t?m outro nome comum conhecido como moscas de patas compridas. Mas nem todas as moscas dolicopod?deas t?m patas compridas.. (para nos confndir ainda mais! . Vi estas mocas mostrando uma posi??o bastante peculiar em rela??o a uma superf?cie. Estas moscas, pelo menos as que vi, mostram uma posi??o vertical do seu corpo em rela??o a uma superf?cie... mas desconhe?o se todas as moscas desta fam?lia partilham este mesmo comportamento. Congratulations  There's little I can add. My guess would be genus Poecilobothrus. Compare with this photo http://www.chili-...itatus.jpg. Ignore the white wing tip of P. nobilitatus, most species of the genus lack this feature. I am not familiar enough with Poecilobothrus to propose a species name. Kahis |
