Helina sp (1)
crex
From today, aprox 65 km NW of Stockholm, Sweden. I will not try to guess family and make a fool of myself ... :) Would be grateful for ID. TIA!

Edit: Changed subject (Grey fly)

A view of abdomen.

Muscidae. Helina female. Possibly depuncta, but I haven't got access to reference material to check this at the moment. Perhaps Kahis can confirm or reject this? Wink

Do you think your grey fly and my grey fly are the same?

Hi Susan
Apart from yours being a male, and a bit out of focus (Wink), there is a significant difference in that yours has 4 rather than 3 post-sutural dorsocentrals. I'd say it was a muscid and probably Phaoniinae and possibly Helina, but I wouldn't like to say more than that.

Blast and [insert swearword of choice here] Angry - stuff I should remember to do every time. If Kahis's figures are right and it takes 10K specimens to get to grips with diptera, I calculate it's going to take me about 20 years at my current rate. Sad

Thanks Tony - I'll get there eventually, especially with the fab forum's help.Cool

Thank you Tony. Kahis?

Helina, possibly depuncta is the best I can do. H. depuncta is usually rather yellowish, but not always.

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
