Three Syrphids
Juergen Peters
Hello!

These three syrphid flies I photographed yesterday here in Ostwestfalen/Germany. Can anybody help me identifying them? Thanks!

The third one is a Scatophagidae-lookalike. Have I again found a Brachyopa species (perhaps B. vittata)?

Hello Juergen,
Your first picture shows a male of melnagyna cincta. Characteristic are the first spots on the abdomen, these are small and triangulair with a very sharp point!
Second is a female of Parasyrphus malinellus, with it's very shiny thorax, small dustspots on the head and the yellowish first and second legs (tibia and tarsal segments)
I first thought it was a female Parasyrphus punctulates with connected spots, but these have a dull thorax, so not shiny!
Third picture is not a syrphid, it is indeed a member of the Scathophagidae I think! THe upper picture shows strong bristles on its face, which never occurs in Syrphids!
Greetings,

Hello, Gerard!

Just another question: Is Melangyna cincta a synonym of Meligramma cincta? Surprisingly I cannot find one of these two in the Syrphidae checklist of Lower Saxony.
Best regards,
Jürgen
