Here I am again (defying frustrating problems with my server to connect!) with another Diptera photographed near Rome in Italy. Can anyone help me identify it? Thanks, Sarah |

I've done a quick Google on the Therevidae and the nearest I can find is Thereva sp., perhaps T. nobilitata. Thanks a million Paul, Sarah |

I am by no means certain about the species mentioned. The illustrated specimen has distinctly marked wings and I cannot recall ever having seen nobilitata having that in Northwestern Europe. but I may be mistaken...

Paul, you are right. The wing markings should be very distinctive. Never seen anything like it (in Thereva, that is) Theo |

Thanks Paul and Theo. I'm starting to realise just how complex (but fascinating) the world of the Diptera really is! For now, I'll just label it as Therevidae, then if I find anything more specific, I'll see what you all think before committing myself! Again, thanks, Sarah |

That is Thereva spiloptera Wiedemann 1824 according to Kevin Holston (Stockholm)... |
