Dolichopodidae
Susan R Walter
I assume this is Dolichopodidae. I am sure the very strong 'mark of Zorro' wing venation should tell me something, but I am not sure what. There is some pennation on the hind tibiae and the antennae seem quite distinctive. Am I right in thinking it is male?

19 August 2006, east London cemetery park. 5mm.

Hi Susan.
With genitalia on first image it isn't male, but MALE!
I think Dolichopus griseipennis.

For such a little beast, he is rather impressive, isn't he? Cool

What are the key characters for this species please?

I think = I'm not sure, so let's wait for expert.
But as you wrote vein M with 'mark of Zorro' exclude a lot of candidates.

Hi, Susan and Nikita.
Nikita is most probably right. Wing, legs and antenna look like those in Dolichopus griseipennis Stannius, 1831: Isis (Oken) 1831: 49

Lower postocular cilia should be pale;
Hind femur should bear fringe of long setiform ventral hairs.

Regards,

Many thanks Igor and Nikita.

I have checked and the post ocular hairs are pale, and there is a row of long fine stiff hairs ventrally on the hind femora - they are a bit irregular and not very dense, but I guess they qualify as a fringe. They are surprisingly difficult to see, and I hadn't noticed them until you sent me looking for them, so thank you for that.
