[Gasterophilus sp] Unknown larva
Arthropa
Hi,

I'd like your opinion with this larva, found in some ruminant droppings on a way in the forest :
arthropa.free.fr/photos/ATH05-06-12-059.jpg
(Bullion, near Paris (France) - 12th June 2005 - Length was 23 mm)

What do you think about it : could it be some diptera larva, or not ?

From what I can see there appear to be the larval mouth hooks of the calyptrate and acalyptrate flies. Considering the size I would say some kind of calyptrate fly. Maybe my books will yield somethingmore specific.

It seems to be ready to pupate. That made me think, as it was found in the forest, too, that it might be a bot fly. The picture very much resembled that of an oestrid in the Manual of Mearctic Diptera. Maybe Theo can tell a little more about it.

This is a Gasterophilus larva (Gasterophilidae) - an internal parasite of horses. (One for the gallery, please?)
