 hundreds of sawfly larva?

Hi, Please could anyone help to id these? They were approx between 7-12mm,and the silk structure they lived in,near the end of a small branch of a young hawthorn,was about 10cm L+W and about 2-3 cm thick in the center. I found them in sussex UK,near farmland and mixed woodland. I had thought they might be moth catterpillars,but someone suggested sawfly larva? thankyou  |

You are right, they are lepidopteran, not symphytan, but beyond that I've no idea! Sue |

Sawfly larvae are never hairy to my knowledge. So Lepidoptera they are! But I can not tell you more than they belong to Noctuiodea, Arctiidae, Lymantriidae, Notodontidae are the most obvious candidates. Gabor Keresztes Japan Wildlife Gallery Carpathian Basin Wildlife Gallery |
