I suppose this is a Tipula larva. Found in the sand of a small forest stream in Bavaria (23rd February). The one in the picture was 2cm, I also found a 4,5cm long one I've read they eat dead plant material, but why does it need those strong "mandibels" then visible in the picture (most of the time they were retracted)? Looks very much like the larvae of Tipula (acutitipula) maxima-group. I have no idea about the function and size of the mandibles |
