Tipulidae - Tipula?
Sundew
Hi,
Is there a chance to identify this Tipulid from Berlin? I guess it is not too rare, and the wing pattern is conspicuous. Something like Tipula scripta?
Thanks, Sundew

I seem to be working on the same fly. I think Philippe Moniotte's tipulid posted 31/10 is also the same though this fly measures ~13mm from palps to genitalia. I will send some more detailed pictures in the hope of a specific ID. This one was found in the Isles of Scilly regularly during late October

The genitalia suggested this crane fly is in the subgenus Tipula (Savtshenkia) group. Oosterbroek listed four species that occur in the Isles of Scilly: Tipula eugeni, T. jeekeli, T. serrulifera, and T. trinacria. Hope this will provide you with some lead.

Thank-you. Interesting - three of the species you mention do not seem to appear on the British List (according to Dipterists Forum) and the remaining one (serrulifera) appears to be an endangered montane species. I'll keep searching - but may have to settle for Savtshenkia group.

Thanks to all that contributed to this thread! If even Chris's detail photos do not lead us further than to subgenus Tipula (Savtshenkia) group, we should gratefully accept this ID.
