Eumerus cf. amoenus, Israel
GlassOWater
Taken in Jerusalem, about 12 mm in size.

There are two white spots in the abdomen.

Eyes are tight - male?

Mostly white abdomen.

A male in the genus Eumerus, probably not further identifiable!

What is needed for further identification?

Andre
The pinned specimen, preferrably with the genitalia extracted. And some good literature Smile
I'd be interested to try...

I don't collect insects. Smile

Or a picture of the abdominal pattern and a better picture of the fourth sternite, this might do the job, but I can't promise a sure id.

Without a good look at the genitalia, there is not much somebody can say about the species. But if you want a good guess, from the overall shape, the thin stripes on the thorax head shape etc, I would guesss it is Eumerus amoenus. It is common in Israel, but there are many even undescribed species there...

Thanks! I don't have better pictures of that one, so we'll have to do with Eumerus cf. amoenus! And on a different note, how come you know about taxonomy in Israel?

I collected there many years ago (awesome collecting, many new spcies) and I know several Dipterists from Israel (Amnon Freidberg, Netta Dorchin)...
I just finished a work about Nemotelus of Israel with Amnon (and I was planning to work on some of the Eumerus from there).... So there are many connections...

Hi GlassOWater
It would really help you to identify flies if you did collect some of them. Can I encourage you to try collecting?

Very interesting Martin!

As for Nigel, well, I would like to collect. But right now I don't have the time for it, since I'm starting my military service in less than 3 weeks. So I'm just trying to learn as much as I can without putting too much time into this. Smile

Come on, refuse! Bar Rafaeli is also not going to join....! Pfft

Because of this it now it is dangerous to mention her name in Israel...
