UK Suffolk 19th July

Very pleased to find the enigmatic tachinid Redtenbacheria insignis yesterday.

I think Theo will like this Smile

Yes that is excellent. This is the third one known to me from this year, after mine and Sundew’s.

So, can you please provide some background information on the catch. Oak forest ?

Hi Theo,

Mixed habitat but yes plenty of oak. It was in a water trap either overnight or early morning in cool overcast weather.
Another UK specimen from this year collected by Ryan Mitchell can be found here -

and another UK specimen was found in 2019 further North I think- maybe check with Chris Raper.
Regards,
Steve

Thanks Steve

So are you implying the specimen was likely active at night / in early morning ?
That might explain why it is found more often in malaisetraps than by net.

It was between 9pm and 7.30am, probably early morning. Tschorsnig (http://www.nadsdi...s/TT18.pdf) thinks it is a strong candidate for being nocturnal but I'm not aware of it turning up in Lepidopterists' light traps in the UK.

Our Sundew did photograph it this year, so at daytime. Definitely not exclusively nocturnal, but it might prefer to be active between dusk and dawn, as for instance Istochaeta.

So it is not black and white, but it is a big clue.
