A wasp, resembling a Podalonia. But with a strange shape of the abdomen to me. On Ragwort.
The Netherlands, Bergen 10-8-2020.

Hi Thijs, not sure but it looks very much like a Sphex funerarius, I've found in my garden last year - except for the segment behind the petiole (can it be an injury?) and I cannot see the strong spines on the tibiae.

Greetings, Eric

Hi Eric,
Thanks
The segment behind the petiole is also my problem. I've had several times Podalonia hirsuta in our garden. But not with this shaped segment. I've another photo of the legs.

Regards, Thijs

Hi Thijs, the tibiae are not as spiny as those of my Sphex (15-25 mm) and yours look smaller. I think you should stay with Podalonia hirsuta - I cannot think of a Sphecidae with a segment shaped in that way.

Cheers, Eric
