Philip synonymised it with the Paleartic Hybomitra arpadi in 1965. Placed in the H. borelis-group (Chvala et al. 1972. "The Horse Flies of Europe".)
Characterized by wide, parallel-sided, black median stripe on abdomen with orange/brown lateral patches on S2 and S3. Wing clear with brownish costal vein. See head photo for further characters.
