Scenopinus fenestralis
NJG
Hi,

Yesterday evening I found this fly on my window. I think this must be a Scenopinus fenestralis. It's length is about 6 mm though! Are there any other known Scenopinus species in Belgium?
This individual had asymmetrical veins, resulting in a small cell in the left wing and none in the right.
I think this is rather strange.

It certainly looks like S. fenestralis. The size of fenestralis can vary significantly, the smallest specimens being hardly half as long as the largest. There are a few other species that could appear in Your country, but they have either dark wings, whitish halteres, or black legs. Some exotic species are occasionally imported into Europe with dried goods.

Short additional crossveins are common in many flies, perhaps up to 10% or so in some species. They are typically found only on one wing.
